L&M Fly-In Outposts

Guidelines & Helpful Hints
1) Obey all fishing regulations and our “Catch & release” policy for all of the lakes.

NO walleye over 18” to be eaten (only one per day to be kept for eating on each license)

NO northern over 25” to be eaten

NO small mouth bass over 13” to be eaten on bass lakes

NO FISH to be taken home (Catch & Release)

2) All outpost cabins are equipped with solar power, so please conserve energy by turning off all lights when not in use. Also make sure the water is shut off. If not, you might be without power.

3) If you notice the water pump continuing to run after you are done running water, shut the breaker off at the box or turn the pump off at the lake. You can still use the water but you will have to turn the pump or switch on and off after you are done. Be sure to phone the office and let us know there is a problem so the pilot will bring in the materials needed to fix this. Running water uses the most power, so conserve!

4) If you have open camp fires, make sure you put them out completely, as a “Sleeper spark” can ignite up to 24 hours later, and you could be found responsible for the cost of putting out a forest fire.

5) The bar-b-que grills and fish cookers are only to be used OUTSIDE the outpost cabin. Please DO NOT bring them inside the cabin to cook for any reason.

SAFETY FIRST Please drain the grease in the cookers and put it in the containers it was brought in and bring it out on the plane with you. It will help to prevent any bear problems during your fishing trip.

6) When fueling the boats, be sure that the barrel is SHUT OFF at the tank to avoid any spills, as the hose could develop a leak and drain the barrel. NOTE: the hoses for the motors hook up both ways--make sure that the arrow on the bulb points towards the motor. Gas will not flow if it is hooked up wrong. Thus....your motor will not run.

7) To start the motors, squeeze the bulb till it is hard. Put shift lever in neutral, set throttle at 1/8 open, and pull out choke and pull till the motor fires. When it starts, put choke back in when it begins to run. PLEASE NOTE: If you try and start the motor in gear, the pull rope will stay out or you will break the rope and safety switch.

8) The hot water heater, cook stove and refrigerator are all run by propane. If they happen to go out, you can relight the stove by putting a match at the pilot tube and it will light. On the water heater, turn the control to pilot setting, hold in the button, and put a match on the pilot tube. Continue to hold the button down for about 30 seconds, then release. If the pilot stays lit, turn the control to “run” position. If not, repeat the process.

9) To relight the refrigerator, follow the instructions inside the door on the Servel models.

The Sibers and Consuls, open the bottom door and turn the control to the coldest position, which is clockwise. Hold the button in, like on the water heater, and push the igniter button. If the igniter doesn’t work, pull fridge out and place a match in the back below the chimney. Hold the button in for 30 seconds and release. If it goes out, repeat the process.

*** Also to relight the cook stove if the pilots should go out on you, lift the top plate and hold a match to the burner.

The oven also has a pilot that is down in the broiler compartment of the stove.

10) The refrigerators are working if you can hear the burner burning or feel the heat coming out of the chimney. Remember, if you fill propane fridges TOO FULL, they will not run adequately. They do not cool very fast as there is no fan. DO NOT open the doors any more than necessary.

11) It is appreciated if you do these things at the outpost cabin during your fishing trip.

**Separate aluminum cans and tin cans from the rest of the garbage.

We try to recycle as much as possible even here in the bush.

PLEASE SEPARATE.

** Double bag all of your garbage to help from leaks on the planes, as your garbage goes out with you when you fly back to the airbase.

** Defrost one refrigerator the night before you are going to leave. Put all of your perishables into one refrigerator so that one is good to go for the next group and please be sure to have the ice cube trays full for the next party.

** Take all of the foods out of the refrigerator and take out with you. Clean out the cabinets, too, and take out what foods are there so there is plenty room for the next group. If you don’t want to haul things back home, bring it back to the airbase to dispose of. One complaint we hear is that there is never enough room for new guests to put the food and supplies they bring.

12) Take all fish cleanings and old food scraps across the lake for the gulls, ravens and eagles. They will clean it all up and it will not smell up the outpost cabins from this garbage.

DO NOT throw any table scraps or grease out around the cabin as bear are easily drawn in by this.

You can burn your burnable in the fire pit or the wood burning stove, if there are NO fire restrictions on. This all cuts down on the amount of garbage that has to be hauled out on the planes.

13). Each group is given a satellite phone to take out to the cabin with you. When you use the satellite phone and once you have found a signal, stand STILL out on the dock and do not walk around (away from trees and buildings) Leave the phone in the cabin when you aren’t using it and leave it turned OFF at all times unless you need to use it. Don’t wait for incoming calls. They are only for you to make outgoing calls. You will want to save the battery for if you need to use it.

DO NOT take out in the boat with you or leave it lay outside. Getting wet will damage the phone and your group will be charged if the phone comes back and is damaged.

Please call us if there is a problem, anything missing at the cabin or anything is broken so we can replace it or have it fixed for you during your trip or before the arrival of the next group.

14) Please pull up any boats you have used on the portage lakes and turn them over. Also return the gas tanks and equipment back to the camp unless you are told other.

15) Before leaving at the end of your trip, please clean out the boats, pull the boats up on the ramps and pull the plugs out in the bottom of the boat. Be sure to clean up all your gear from the boats and any trash you have left in them.

Leave the motors on the boats unless you are told differently.

16) CLEAN THE CABIN!!! Before you leave, you are expected to clean the cabin. We expect you to leave the cabin as clean, if not better, than you found it.

17) Pour a couple of pails of water down the holes in the outhouses to help with the smell and keep bacteria working.

18) If there is a health emergency, us the satellite phone to call us. If something happens at night, we are unable to come to get you out. But we will be there as soon as possible or we will call someone (another air service) that is closer to come to get you out if it is necessary.

19) Use cautions and think safety when you are in the bush. We want you to have a safe and fun vacation. But remember, you are in the wilderness

Be careful and be safe. Have a great trip.

And Have fun!!!
